Samuel Darragh McGredy IV

Samuel Darragh McGredy IV carried forward the fourth generation of a Northern Irish rose-breeding dynasty but developed a style very much his own. He took control of the family nursery in the 1950s and modernized its breeding program, later relocating his family and breeding operation to New Zealand in 1972. The move allowed him to select roses outdoors in a favorable climate while remaining closely connected to important international markets.

McGredy became especially known for bold color, unusual markings, and roses with unmistakable personality. His introductions include Trumpeter, New Zealand, Handel, Paddy McGredy, Elizabeth of Glamis, Papageno, and many others. His “hand-painted” roses, beginning with Picasso, explored patterned and splashed coloration that looked radically different from many traditional roses of the period. In addition to breeding, McGredy advocated for stronger plant breeders' rights, helping advance recognition that breeders should receive protection for the new plants they created.
