Jacques Mouchotte

Jacques Mouchotte spent his professional rose-breeding career with Meilland®, eventually becoming an important figure in the company's modern research program. When he took responsibility for garden-rose research in the late 1970s, Meilland was actively looking for new ways roses could be used, and Mouchotte became involved in expanding the market beyond traditional Hybrid Tea beds.

His work contributed to major developments in miniature roses, groundcover roses, hedge and landscape roses, and other new garden forms. He was closely involved with the Meillandina miniature program and with breeding concepts that helped roses move into broader landscape use. His career is important because it illustrates how rose breeding shifted in the late twentieth century from concentrating primarily on the individual bloom to considering the entire plant—its size, purpose, flowering behavior, and usefulness in modern landscapes.
