The House of Meilland® is one of the most historically important rose-breeding families in the world. Now spanning six generations, the French company has spent well over a century developing garden roses, landscape roses, and varieties for the cut-flower industry. Its modern research center carries out thousands of planned crosses every year while evaluating new roses for flower form, color, fragrance, resistance, and commercial performance around the world.
No discussion of Meilland is complete without Peace, bred by Francis Meilland and known in France as Mme A. Meilland. Introduced internationally around the end of World War II, Peace became one of the world's most famous roses and helped establish Meilland as a truly international breeding house. The family's long relationship with the American company now known as Star® Roses and Plants dates to the 1930s and has helped bring generations of Meilland roses to North American gardeners.
Meilland's later work reaches far beyond traditional Hybrid Teas. Its breeding contributed roses such as Bonica®, Eden Climber®, the Drift® family, Meidiland® landscape roses, ROMANTICA® roses, miniature programs such as Sunblaze®, and numerous award-winning garden and landscape introductions. Star® Roses and Plants describes Meilland as its longest-running breeder relationship and one of the most awarded foreign breeders in North America.
