Marie-Louise Meilland

Marie-Louise “Louisette” Meilland was both a breeder and an important figure in maintaining the continuity of the Meilland family's rose enterprise. Raised in the Paolino rose-growing family of southern France, she became closely involved with breeding, selection, nursery operations, and eventually the international Meilland business after marrying Francis Meilland. Following Francis's death in 1958, she helped sustain the company while continuing her own work with roses.

Biographical accounts credit her with creating more than 100 rose varieties across Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, climbing, and other classes. Her importance therefore lies not only in individual cultivars but also in helping preserve the momentum of one of the world's most important rose-breeding families through a major generational transition. Her career is a reminder that the history of Meilland® was built by several family members working in breeding, selection, production, and international development rather than by a single famous name.
